What is it?

Through the FISH&I project, we aim to elevate aquaponic systems from Technology Readiness Level (TRL) 6 to TRL 9. This involves implementing an innovative approach that integrates Internet of Things (IoT) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies. Our objective is to develop a fully automated and predictive data management system capable of optimizing environmental and productive parameters in real-time for the well-being of fish, plants, and microorganisms.
By achieving this transition, we seek not only to enhance the technological maturity of aquaponics but also ensure its operational efficiency and sustainability on a larger scale.
The integration of IoT sensors and AI algorithms will enable precise monitoring and adjustments, ensuring optimal conditions for both aquatic life and plant growth while minimizing resource usage.

This transition towards industrializing and commercializing the aquaponics model is founded on three primary pillars:

tecnologia
Advanced Technological Integration:
The integration of IoT and AI technologies within the facility will enable unprecedented monitoring and control capabilities, significantly enhancing energy efficiency and sustainability. This includes the use of more efficient feeds.
adattabilità
Adaptability & Biodiversity:
The ability to support a greater variety of species, including microorganisms, will enrich biodiversity and increase the commercial appeal of the facility
sviluppo
Development of a Standard:
Creating a certifiable standard for eco-sustainable aquaponics based on our findings will elevate both the profile and competitiveness of our business model. This standardization ensures consistency in quality while promoting best practices across the industry.

Through these innovations, FISH&I will not only demonstrate the full functionality of the system in a real operational context but also its scalability and replicability—key elements for reaching Technology Readiness Level (TRL) 9.
This represents a significant step forward towards a future where aquaculture can thrive in harmony with the environment, offering both an economic model and high-quality products efficiently and sustainably. Regarding the development of the device that converts ammonia from fish farming into hydrogen, our goal is to advance it to TRL 6-7 by enhancing its ability to adapt to variability in ammonia production. This will enable us to ensure a constant and efficient energy supply by utilizing the produced hydrogen for essential processes such as oxygenation and water circulation within fish tanks. Additionally, we plan to accumulate hydrogen during periods of higher ammonia production.
